Solar Energy for lighting in Al-Khawbah, Luhayyah District, Hodiedah Governorate
The project targeting 434 homes in Al-Khawbah fishing village, Luhayyah District, Hodiedah Governorate. The use of solar energy for homes electrification is growing in Yemen after communities? awareness of the efficacy of renewable energy and its impact on families livelihood. The recent inflation in traditional fuel cost and its scarcity encouraged local communities to adopt renewable energy sources. Al-Khawbah community main occupations is fishing and herding livestock. Hence Al-khawbah is a major fish market covering northern governorates including Sana?a.

The approximate number of families benefiting from the project are 434 families and 3199 inhabitants (1664 M & 1535 F). The project will assist local community to acquire solar systems for home electrification including solar modules 150 WP, dry and zero maintenance batteries of 100AH, charge controller together of wiring and lamps. The project will save the environment the emission of 43 tons/year of CO2. Community are aware of the importance of project sustainability hence a revolving fund mechanism will be established through a monthly subscription of YER1,000/system/month.
Environmental awareness will be raised among all beneficiaries towards environmental sustainability, CO2 reduction, climate change mitigation and wider environment.
