Strengthen of Community Based Resource Management for Arnavon Communities, Isabel and Choiseul
The primary issue the project seeks to address is to raise awareness to three communities, schools (both primary and secondary) of Arnavon Community Marine Park (ACMP) in unsustainable developments such as mining, logging, and crosscutting issues such as climate change and family planning (increase in population). As far as Environment work is concerned in the Solomon Islands, ACMP has been a national flagship site for the country for instance; they were the first community based organisation to manage its own natural resources in the South Pacific, and recently their Protected Area was declared as the first Marine Park in the country. In fact, most of the lessons drawn to develop the PA Act 2010 was taken from ACMP hence they are the leading example of conservation in Solomon Islands and in the region.
However, they acknowledged the ongoing demand for natural resources due to population increase but they also respect the uniqueness of the biodiversity that they still have in their communities. Hence, by effectively addressing the issue they hope to create a good citizen of ACMP in the future. And by building the capacity of the frontiers (conservation rangers- youths, women and children) they can be assured of the support from the communities to protect the environment through people's power (bottom up approach).
