Mitigating Sedimentation in Lake Ziway through rehabilitating Upper Ketar catchments *Note: Originally ETH/SGP/OP6/Y5/STAR/LD/2019/14
This project is an intervention to increase the vegetation cover upstream for reduction of sedimentation of Lake Ziway. The project plans to cover the upper river courses of the major tributaries of Ashebeka and Ketar rivers draining into Ziway by planting Bamboo in different phases. Bamboo is chosen as vegetation cover for its properties of fast growth and vegetative nature on the one hand and its characteristics as industrial plant that can be commercialized as means of income. That means, Bamboo planting will have double effect of generating income for the local people while providing fast vegetation cover for the catchments. In the first phase our organization will directly attempt to cover 75 hectares of land in 15 kebeles on its own for demonstration. With this demonstration effect, the local community is expected to expand planting bamboo for its commercial use up to 120 hectares of land in the upstream down to the confluence of the two rivers. To that effect local farmers will be provided with seedlings, training and technical support on bamboo growing and harvesting. That contributes to reducing sedimentation rate and speed of drying of Lake Ziway
