The ?Itshetse? Initiative ? A Mogome Village Waste Water Recycling and Hydroponic Garden Project
?Embrace & Serve? Community Care Trust (?E&S?CCT) proposes to implement a two-year project in a Primary School in Mogome Village in the Central District of Botswana, to pilot the use of processed/recycled grey and black water (from the school and teachers? premises) in the production of vegetables and development of an orchard for the benefit of school children and vulnerable members of the community.
The project?s major goals are:
i) Provision of food to vulnerable groups and school children through the use of an environmentally friendly approach to horticulture.
ii) Introduction of a cross-cutting, sustainable, productive, environmentally friendly and innovative solution to the area, that includes both sanitation and nutrition value chains.
iii) Conservation of water in an area currently fraught with problems of poor water quality and low quantities from the municipal supply.
iv) Improvement of community livelihoods through skills share and empowerment by/from professionals of renown.
v) Introduction of Hydroponics as an alternative approach to gardening and agricultural food production in the school and the rest of the community.
vi) To help guide national policies on water conservation, waste management, rural dependence on solar energy, and agricultural food production.
vii) To raise awareness and educate the community on the need for compliance with the Rio Convention Frameworks, especially in increasing not only women?s, but all key groups?, access to education and information, as well as to natural and family resources, and in decision making regarding their management; benefit-sharing; participation in community projects, policy making and programming.
Water shortage problems abound countrywide in Botswana, and Mogome and its neighbouring villages (Radisele, Tewane and Mokgware) are no exception. In an endeavour to develop horticultural programs aligned to its goal of catering to the food security of key and vulnerable groups in the area, through visiting various news sources, social media and conversations with key community members, ?E&S?CCT realized an extremely troubling problem of water shortage and poor water quality output from existing sources.
