Manual and dissemination of conservation behavior: targeted for porters in Ujung Kulon National Park, West Java
Project goal:
To increase conservation effort and awareness of the visitors to Ujung Kulon National Parks through well educated and trained porters in conservation activities as mediator.
Project objective :
1. To train porters in understanding better guiding practices in conservation efforts and activities which in turn they will transfer it to the visitors of the national park;
2. To broaden the basic nature conservation knowledge of the porters which could be seen as potential entry point in implementing the concept;
3. To increase the participate of the porters in implementing nature conservation concepts and activities;
4. To develop a concise manual which completed with maps of Ujung Kulon National Park;
5. To increase the ability of communication of the porters in order to transfer all their knowledge in conservation activities;
6. To increase the involvement and participation of visitors in nature conservation.
Activities to be carried out under the project :
1. Preparation.
a) Information gathering based on first and secondary data as a way to understand the history and natural resources (flora, fauna, others) of Ujung Kulon National Park;
b) Field survey - determined track maps;
2. Local training and education in the field.
a) History background of Ujung Kulon National Park;
b) Knowledge on flora including the spreads of vegetation;
c) Knowledge on fauna - it?s spread, it?s role, it?s habitat and it?s behavior;
d) Park management and understanding of rules applied;
e) Map reading.
3. Outreach Approach.
a) Dissemination of the manual on natural resources and forest (national park) to the porters and (bilingual in Indonesian and English);
b) Dissemination of the manual on natural resources and forest (national park) policies to the porters (bilingual in Indonesian and English);
4. Technical Assistance.
a) Field training will be implemented in the spot to allow the targeted persons (porters and forest policemen) to understand better and sense the actual condition (training will be done in several different area needed)
b) Simple practice of problem dealing which may occur in the field
5. Evaluation and Reporting.
Project Participants and/or beneficiaries :
1. Biodiversity Conservation - Bogor.
2. Tamanjaya village, Sumur dub-district, Pandeglang, Jawa Barat.
3. Ujung Kulon National Park.
Anticipated result of project :
1. Basic knowledge of conservation effort to be understood and adopted by porters, which in turn it will be implemented in the filed;
2. Porters have basic communication skill to guide the visitors while they transfer their knowledge in nature conservation concept - including reading simple maps;
3. Porters could utilize the manual produced;
4. Increased nature conservation awareness of the porters;
5. Nature conservation effort actively implement by the porters, visitors as well as other parties involved in Ujung Kulon National Park management.
