Using Solar System for Providing Drinking Water and Irrigation - Afsar Village, Socotra
Afsar village (N 12.576100 E 54.212580), located half way between Homhill and Dehameri Protected Areas (less then 5 km) and within Momi national park on Socotra. The community consists of 20 families with total of 200 people. The community experiencing problems with drinking water from open polluted water course due to human and animal waste and could not use the water for irrigation due to water distance below the gardens. Fetching water and gardenning is sloley women' responsibility on Socotra. Provision of water to homes aimed at reducing hard labour on women and the establishement of the gardens a long with training would empower women for improving their families livelihood (nutrition and income). With the use of solar energy for pumping water, commuinty can access clean and safe water for domestic use as well as watering 12*225sqm gardens for vegetable production for own use and sale of extra vegetables. The project includs training for capacity building for women in the village in gardens management, preserving vegetable and marketing. Benficiaries would pay monthly subscription of eq. US$ 2.5 into a revolving fund to ensure project sustainability. This exapmle has been copied to other projects on Socotra where reveolving fund is used for projects sustainability.
