Use of solar energy in water supply for Shu'eb village, Socotra, Yemen
Shu'eb village located at N 12 55887 E 53 39385, Qalanciah district, Socotra Island, Hadramout Governorate, Republic of Yemen. The population of shu'eb is 600 people in 75 families sloley a fishing community. Water supply is from two sources, the first at village site close to the sea yeild brakish water and the other is from well located at 2 km away. Women at the village expressed their difficulities in fetching frersh water on their back from this better quality source.
The projectt aimed at providing community with solar pump to elevate the water 70 m to a hilltop 600 m away from source to reach the village by gravfity. The project impact would reduce women labour, kidny problems from drinking brakish water, improve sanitation and the well being of families.
Coomunity would participate in the projject in as follow: In kind conttribution amount to 17.6% of cost and pay monthly suscription of US$ 1.5/familylmonth to a revolving fund to ensure project sustaibaility. The Scotra Conservation and Development Program (bilateral project) co-financee 18.8% of projectt cost.
