Capacity Building and Supporting Initiatives on Sustainable Agriculture and Promoting Agro-Biodiversity in Selected States of Peninsular Malaysia
The project aims to raise the awareness, support and build the capacity of farmers to adopt environmentally, socially and economically friendlier sustainable agriculture while enhancing the conservation and sustainable use of agro-biodiversity. CAP's strategy is to rapidly move towards the adoption and implementation of "environmentally friendlier" and sustainable agriculture policies and practisesby raising critical awareness and constructive option among farmers and government officials on the manifold social, economic and environmental benefits of lower input agriculture. At farm level, training and adequate capacity building advisory services would be provided to the farmers to enable them to adopt and implement the environmentally friendlier technologies of sustainable agriculture while also simultaneously conserving and sustainably using agro-biodiversity. Further, the education of consumers is also critical in encouraging the consumption of chemical free produce, so that farmers have a market for such products.

Project Characteristics and Results
A memorandum entitled "Sustainable Agriculture: An Environmentally, Socially and Economically Feasible Option to Meet Food Demand and Security", was sumitted to the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industries, Ministry of Higher Education and University Putra Malaysia incorporating CAP's know how to mainstream sustainable agriculture and the conservation of agro-biodiversity, prompting a response from the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industries to study the recommendations. Papers and presentations on Sustainable Agriculture were made to various other government departments and universities to advocate the importance of sustainable agriculture and conservation of agro-biodiversity.
Replication of project activities
A total of 24 education programmes was originally targeted to reach out to farmers, women and consumers in 3 states in Peninsular Malaysia, however the programmes were conducted in a total of 7 states due to high demand of interested public from bordering states, who came to know about the sustainable agriculture programmes through media.
