Protection and revitalization of biological diversity by promoting sustainable tourism in the canyon Matka
The aim of the project is ensuring environmental sustainability in Matka canyon in accordance with the percepts of sustainable development. The project will ensure appropriate management of nature and natural resources and act towards conservation of landscapes by supporting the development of sustainable tourism and nature protection through public awareness raising. The project strives towards maximizing the positive benefits of tourism to biodiversity, ecosystems, and economic and social development, while minimizing negative social and environmental impacts from tourism. Sustainable use of natural resources and sustainable tourism, without significant damage of parts of the nature and with the least possible disturbance of natural balance is stated in Law on Nature Protection (67/04), Law on Environment (53/05) and is in compliance with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
The development of sustainable tourism will contribute to revenue creation for maintenance of natural resources and income generation for local and indigenous communities. The project will act towards poverty reduction and reduction of threats to biodiversity, and will foster socio and cultural background of local community, specially impacting youth and women.
The project overall objective is to ensure environmental protection and conservation of the biodiversity in Matka canyon in accordance with the percepts of sustainable development in the interest of the present and future development. The development of sustainable tourism, public awareness raising and education of local community and visitors will contribute to protection and conservation of natural resources in Matka canyon as one of the biggest refugial centers of relic and endemic flora and fauna in Republic of Macedonia.
The specific objectives are:
? Specific objective 1:
Protection and conservation of biological diversity and natural resources through public awareness raising among local community and visitors.
? Specific objective 2:
Local economic development and development of sustainable tourism in Matka canyon through renovation and modernization of simple infrastructure for visitors and diversification of recreation activities.
? Specific objective 3:
Ecological education and socio-cultural empowerment of local community
? Specific objective 4:
Promotion of Matka canyon – Natural Monument as a common wealth of the country.

The expected outputs of the project will be:
1. Improved biodiversity protection and environmental protection through raising the public awareness and income generation for maintaining the eco-systems.
2. Development of sustainable tourism by strengthening infrastructure capacity, services and diversification of recreational activities for support of visitors
3. Improved hygiene in the canyon through providing suitable facilities (toilets, bins) raising the public awareness by placing the information boards, organizing educational lectures for local pupils, placing bins etc.
4. Strengthen the livelihood of local inhabitants and raised the local economy through development of sustainable tourism that will enable revenue creation for local community and increasing of the domestic budget.
