Community Based Natural Resource Management in Hulu Kadamaian Kota Belud, Sabah.
GOMPITO is a Dusun indigenous people CBO (and the English translation of the local Dusun language GOMPITO is “Conserving Heritage for Future Generations”). GOMPITO is situated at Kg. Kiau in Sabah, and the project aims to enhance the biodiversity and natural resources at the Kota Belud District of Sabah, with emphasis on local community based conservation, management and sustainable use activities. The project site will cover Kg Kiau Nuluh, Kg Kiau Bersatu and Kg Gahui, along with several other villages within the Nabalu Sub-District of the Kota Belud District. Mostly, the project site is located at the foothills of a World Heritage Site in Sabah, the Kinabalu Mountain, besides it also serving as the water catchment for one of the main tributaries of the Kadamaian River, the primary water system feeding the Kota Belud District, which is not only the rice bowl of Sabah, but is also adjacent to the biodiversity rich Kinabalu Park. Hence, the project activities have been strategically designed to include i) land use management and zoning; ii) sustainable management of the watershed catchment and its forests; iii) capacity building and and training for efficient natural resources management and sustainability; revival and strengthening of traditional knowledge on natural resource management and biodiversity; and v) joint initiatives to further increase community participation, cooperation and solidarity for better conservation of biodiversity and natural resources. Upon its completion, it is hoped that the project and the local communities would have contributed towards improved conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and natural resources at the project site, as well as the sustainable livelihoods of the local Dusun indigenous communities.
