Support in the establishing of the sustainable system for management with solid waste from package of pesticides and fertilizer in the Prespa Lake basin
Support in the establishing of the sustainable system for management with solid waste from package of pesticides and fertilizer in the Prespa Lake basin
The project is focused on the one of the negative effects from agriculture and main problem in the project is pollution of the lake water from washing of the residues from pesticides, nitrates and phosphates from used packages. According the data in the Study for implementation of the system for management with packages from pesticides (financed from UNDP/GEF prespa project), from 1,781,090 kg pesticides used in Macedonia, about 10% are used in Prespa in the same period 30.000 bags from fertilizers are used. After usage of packages in most case they are discarding in the nearness of the rivers and rivulets. With this is allowed washing of the residues from packages from the pesticides and theirs mowing in the Prespa lake.
Main causes for this situation according the opinions of the experts in the studies and from our experience are: 1. Low level of the public awareness for the influence of this problem on the quality of the water; 2. Ineffective monitoring and absence of clear legislative for management of this dangerous waste; 3. Imperfection of the existing system for management of the solid waste, because we have mixing of the dangerous waste with other waste and sometimes this waste is burning down but in most cases this waste is uncontrolled degraded.
The concrete engagement in the period of the implementation of this project are: public awareness campaign for active participation of all stakeholders, organizations of the trainings, networking of all stakeholders and participants of the system, construction of the 5 pilot micro stations and their functioning, incorporation of the PET waste in the system and future functioning of the system.
Experience from realization of this project will be transferred in other regions in the country, through network of the GEFSGP users and other associations.
Implementations of the system will be executed with coordinated activities from existing projects of the UNDP in Prespa (Cross border GEF project and Project for Restoration and protection of the Big River basin financed by SDC)
