North Efate Coastal Resources Managment Networking
North Efate Coastal Resources Managment Networking
Efate Island coastal resources are facing degradation due to increasing urban poor planning development. The obvoius detrminets are the siltation in the lagoons and coral reefs resulting algal blooms, removal of mangrove habitats for tourism development, destruction of turtle nesting sites through sand mining for construction works.
Nearby local conservation initiatives established by local communitites using traditional managment systems to counteract some of the problems. The traditional managment system when not well technically supported, were unable to secure long term benefits for the fast growing population, when targeted commercial species were continually harvested to their decline.
The project will bring local coastal resource management initiatives managers and keyplayers to share their experieces and to identify their capacities needs so to address the problem on a braoder scale.
