Improvement of livelihood in rural community through provision of solar lanterns and environmental rehabilitation
Project location is in Zeron village, 20 km north of keren town, Hamelmalo Sub-region of Anseba Region.

Zeron village is one of the areas severely affected by long war for independence, recurrent drought and poor natural resource management. It has a total population of 2632 making 494 households. Zeron has remained cut off from development measures in the region. It has dry and sunny dominated climatic conditions which has worsened the problem of the villagers and that has resulted for the degradation of the environment. The forest cover of the area is very thin and soil fertility is depleted.

Project duration is one year.

The objectives of the project are: to produce and provide locally assembled solar lanterns for private lighting to households; where electricity is not available among rural communities that are far away from the national grid; train the beneficiaries on cautious measures and basic maintenance of the solar lanterns; increase the awareness of the rural community on environmental issues; improve environmental quality through reforestation.

Project outputs; Improved livelihood of beneficiaries through provision of 400 Solux LED 100 lanterns and rehabilitated environment.

Selection of beneficiaries procure 400 solar lanterns kit, assembling the lanterns, install the lanterns in beneficiary households, training of beneficiaries in the cautious measures and basic maintenance of the solar lanterns, training users of lanterns in environmental protection., .

The Toker Integrated Community Development is the grantee of the project and closely works with experts from the Ministry of Energy and Mines and Ministry of Agriculture for technical backstopping. At the project site, a committee is formed to supervise the day to day activities of the project. Other important stakeholders of the project are Anseba Local Administration, rural communities, VDC, and SGP/Eritrea.
