Up scaling of local Bee Keeping in Dovan village, Sarpang
Up scaling of local Bee Keeping in Dovan village, Sarpang
No cash financing in this Project

Doban geog under Sarpang dzongkhag is the most remote geog among 12 other geogs of Sarpang with a three days walking distance to the nearest road head. Though all households engage in agricultural production and livestock rearing, attempts of individual marketing of agricultural and livestock produce have failed without proper infrastructure in terms of roads and community organization. As a consequence, the community is eager to establish the association of beekeepers which will take care of the collection, processing and transportation of honey initially and other farm produces in the longer run.

With the support of the dzongkhag administration of Sarpang, the beekeepers of Doban will establish an association in accordance with the Civil Society Organizations Act of Bhutan (2007). As prerequisite of such associations, the members will elect a chairperson, secretary and the treasurer amongst themselves. By-laws will be framed and endorsed within the first 6 months of establishment of the association.

The present proposal foresees the provision of seed money amounting to Ngultrum 46,000.00 for the gradual build-up of a revolving fund for investments and a micro-credit scheme available for association members.

The design of the proposed project is based on the experiences with the support to beekeepers in Lalikharka, Tsirang, where beekeepers have formed an association of beekeepers and practice improved management of local bees successfully. With assured markets for the produce, farmers are encouraged to scale up production of honey. Income earned from beekeeping has contributed substantially to sustain family income.
