Enhancing Ecotourism Development in Eguafo Abirem Traditional Protected Areas and Cultural Heritage for Biodiversity Conservation and Poverty Alleviation
PROJECT GOAL-
The goal of the project is to utilize the biological resources within the Dumpow and Abosom Aya Hill Forests to promote community ecotourism whilst enhancing the wellbeing of the local communities. .
Immediate Objectives
• To set up a community ecotourism enterprise for the development, management and marketing of responsible, good quality community-based ecotourism products.
(i) To complete and enhance the facilities and ancillary services within Eguafo traditional area to promote the ecotourism potential of the area.
(ii) To promote and develop alternative livelihood enterprises that support ecotourism development and conservation of biodiversity.
INTENDED RESULTS
1. Eguafo Ecotourism Reception Centre and Viewing Platform constructed and handed over to the community.
2. Eguafo Community–based Eco-Tourism Centre established and important scenic sites, trails, medicinal plants among others within the forest area Identified and developed for eco-tourism
3. Community members actively involved in the promotion of ecotourism provided with alternative sustainable livelihood enterprises.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES TO ACHIEVE OUTPUTS
• Output 1: Eguafo Ecotourism Reception Centre and Viewing Platform constructed and handed over to the community.
• Acquire of additional materials for the construction of a traditional building with indigenous architecture as a Reception Centre Facility- office space, washroom, seating area, etc.
• Acquire additional materials for the completion of the viewing platform for sightseeing to serve as an attraction.
• Construct a Camping facility using mostly local materials.
• Train local community members in effective monitoring and maintenance of the facilities.
Output 2: Eguafo Community–based Eco-Tourism Centre established and important scenic sites, trails, medicinal plants among others within the forest area re-identified and redeveloped for eco-tourism
• Upgrade internet and website facilities for the project
• Provide directional posts to the forest reserves.
• Develop handouts and brochures on the project.
• Develop hiking trails and mark trees
Output 3: Community members actively involved in the promotion of ecotourism provided with alternative sustainable livelihood enterprises.
• Organize upgraded training for the Committee members in project management, conflict resolution and ecotourism development
• Identify alternative means of livelihood with community members
. Help community members identify possible alternatives- Arts and Crafts, Beads, Batik Tie and Dye production, honey production, raising of small ruminants, etc.
. Train identifiable members in enterprise development, management and marketing
. Collaborate with other NGOs to support community- with inputs and micro- credit facilities.
. Organize enterprise development, management and marketing for interested individuals.
. Source for marketing avenues for produce
. Develop demonstration site- Moringa plots, snail rearing, bee keeping

Capacity - Building Component
Local community members will be trained in tree nursery management, community-based eco-tourism management, house keeping and as tour guards.
Notable Community Participation
The community participation in this project is the bedrock of its success. The project will ensure community participatory approach wherein all members of the community would be involved in its planning and designing, implementation, management, monitoring and evaluation of the project activities/impact.
