PORTECCAO DA TARTARUGA MARINHA NA COSTA ANGOCHE
PORTECCAO DA TARTARUGA MARINHA NA COSTA ANGOCHE
The proposed project falls within the focal area of biodiversity. Sea turtles are protected species at the national and international level due to its great biodiversity significance even within the Mozambican coast. In the last years, a combination of factors such as over-fishing, by catch, commercial fishing, habitat destruction for feeding, nesting and resting, and more recently, marine pollution and climate change has caused the decline of populations sea turtle, often to critical levels and many have become extinct. The modernization and intensification of fishing, facing the consequent increase in fishing effort, in addition to pressing marine ecosystems have sharp rates of incidental catch and mortality of sea turtles. The project expects the following results: i) Local community sensitized on the protection and conservation of sea turtles; ii) Local fishermen trained on the types of network used to fish and methods of saving sea turtles in fishing accidental cases; iii) Reduced the number of turtles caught accidentally and intentionally; and iv) Created committees of fishermen who can monitor their peers and local community not to fish for sea turtles and other species in extinction.
