Supporting the establishment of "green” medical ambulatories in seven communities of Armenia through improvement of energy efficiency of the facilities and provision of solar heating systems
The project proposes to implement energy conservation measures combined with the installation of solar hot water systems in 7 medical facilities constructed in different communities of Armenia. The project is co-financed by the Health Project Implementation Unit of the Ministry of Health of Armenia which provides around US$2,015,000.00 investment through the WB loan (75%) and state budget (25%) for constructing 13 ambulatories throughout the republic during 2012-2013. The project activities will be implemented in 7 ambulatories in 5 regions of Armenia.
As a result of application of solar hot water systems and implementation of energy efficiency measures in the medical facilities, daily use of at least 1,900 kg of natural gas will reduce which will save up to US$ 900 and prevent 5,320 kg of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere yearly.
The project substantially complements the government’s environmental policy and strategic objectives and serves as a practical model that creates prerequisites for renewable energy sources use and poverty reduction at the community level.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Apart from creating new temporary jobs in the project communities during construction of the facilities, the availability of medical ambulatories will considerably improve local livelihoods. The project implementation will allow those communities to make savings in the energy consumption bills (US$ 900 anually), while the medical facilities’ staff and patients will have hot water supply and benefit from improved conditions.
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
Due to the project implementation an innovative mechanism of financial savings will be created for the medical facilities of 7 communities through the use of solar energy, which will allow those institutions to save up to US$ 900 annually and use those funds to finance other needs. Monetary saving produced by the project is important especially in light of expected increase of natural gas price.
