Establishment of community orchid conservation and propagation centre
Establishment of community orchid conservation and propagation centre
Gedu – Chasilakha area is one of the only remaining cloud forests in the country presenting a diversity of Orchids. However, over the last 20 years, the Orchids diversity in the area has been declining due to over extraction by various agencies and individuals for decoration during celebration and household use. Considering the importance of the diversity of Orchids and recognizing the decline in its species, this community Orchid conservation and propagation project proposal was submitted by the Samdrup Choling Community Forest Group through the technical support of Geog Forest office. The project aims to conserve the Orchid diversity in the area including making it available to consumers for household conservation and use through propagation. This is expected to reduce collection of orchids from the wild and strengthening its conservation and health of ecosystem.
There are 14 households under the Samdrup Choling Community Forest Group directly benefiting from this conservation project. The income generated from the sale of orchids from the center will be used in the sustainable management of the Samdrup Choling Community Forest. In addition, the center will provide recreation to both local families and botanical tourists and education to students on orchids.

The project was carried out to conservation of local orchid diversity, to promote income generation from sale of orchids and sustainable management of community forest and to provide recreational facility, and education for tourist and students.
