Developing the capacities of local farmers in integrated pest management and best alternative farming practices for sustainable land management within the Tano South District
The main objective of this project is to raise public awareness on the negative effects of wrong uses of chemical and Persistent Organic Pollutant (POPs) in land management and build the capacities of the local vegetable farmers to combine both composting farming methods and the new technology in vegetable production in order to safeguard the health, safety and the welfare of the people in the project communities and the nation at large.
The specific objectives of the project are:
1. To raise awareness on the effects of the wrong use of chemicals and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs),
2. To build the capacities of all vegetable farmers to combine both composting farming and the new technology farming methods in farming within the District.
3. To educate farmers to adopt organic farming methods in the production of vegetables for domestic use and export.
The expected project outputs are:
a. All agro-chemical sellers, Law Enforcing agencies, School children and 200 vegetable farmers in the Tano South District are sensitized on the effects of POPs in sustainable land management and the proper use/disposal of approved agro-chemicals.
b. 200 vegetable farmers trained as lead farmers in organic farming and integrated pest management techniques.
c. 5,000 farmers trained in the new technology which is organic farming to produce organic vegetables for sale in the major cities.
