Land rehabilitation and water source protection
Toedsang village under Barshong Gewog is one of the remote village under Tsirang dzongkhag. On an average, the people of this village are quite poor hardly making their living hand to mouth. Though, they fully depend on subsistence farming, few farmers of this village have lost their agricultural land due to heavy monsoon downpour sometimes in 1980’s resulting in the severe landslides. Moreover, the water source which benefits 18 households has been also destroyed. Still now, the farmers are undergoing through this negative environmental calamities losing portion of their arable land frequently to landslides during monsoon. Further, such incident has posed a risk to the life and property of few farmers with the narrowing of gap between the landslides areas and their home.
Therefore, the project “Land rehabilitation and water source protection” in Toedsang village was carried out with Toedsang Land and Water Management Tshogpa, a community based group. The objectives of the project were to improve and enhance the livelihood of the people through enhancing and restoring land and water sources thereby also, protecting and conserving the natural environment.
Through the project, five acres of land was successfully rehabilitated by planting bamboo in buffer zone along with other saplings. The land rehabilitation has reduce occurrence of landslides thus, loss of biodiversity and threat to livelihood of the farmers are reduced. In addition, vegetative coverage was improved in four acres of land to protect the water sources; mass plantation of water friendly specicies like Ficus and Gmelina arborea along with champ and cupress and fencing was carried out preventing cattle grazing and unsustainable resources harvesting.

High Sustainability: Sustainable methods were applied in protection of water sources and rehabilitation of land. Also, our beneficiaries were directly involved in implementation of project activities thus ensuring ownership to the project.
