Protection of agriculture land through riverbank management and plantation
Budhuney area in Samtse gewog under Samtse Dzongkhag is frequently eroded with landslides during summer and the rising river-water levels threatens some of the households living in the area including their agricultural lands.
In the recent past, nearby paddy fields have been washed away by the river and the river-water levels in summer continue to pose further risks to adjacent areas. With poor land and water management system in place, the area is further prone to continuous degradation leading to loss of biodiversity, natural resources, loss of more agricultural lands and threatening the livelihood of the people.
The project “Protection of agriculture land through riverbank management and plantation” was carried out with Budheney Village Management group, a community based group to restore the existing degraded land and sustainably manage the river banks which will decrease degradation protect environment, loss of biodiversity and reduce threat to livelihood of the people. The overall objective of the project is to promote community-led integrated approach to land reclamation and river protection to ensure livelihood security of Budhuney village. The objectives are;
i. Create awareness and empower local communities particularly the vulnerable in environmental management and livelihood approaches
ii. Restore existing degraded land through reclamation plantation and enhance biodiversity in the area
iii. Prevent further land degradation of remaining areas through river protection systems
iv. Share community lessons with other areas of similar context in the district as well as across the country.
The project river protection works, reinforcement of dredging river banks and taming of river course were completed. Through project, more than one acre of existing degraded land has been restore through reclamation plantation of some native tree saplings. The project has not only has brought great benefit to 17 households but also prevented land degradation, enhanced biodiversity and protected the natural environment.
