Development of a fishery as a pilot model for conservation and reproduction of biodiversity in Vorotan river basin
The project aims to establish a fish-breeding complex in Vaghatin community of Syunik region. The initiative will create an opportunity to implement protection and reproduction of endangered Salmo trutta m. fario. The project envisages free release of three to five thousand juvenile fish into surrounding natural environment. Besides, within the project activities it is anticipated to invite respective specialists with corresponding practical work experience from scientific, research or governing agencies, and to organize trainings in Vaghatin community on conservation and sustainable use of biological resources and promotion of agro-ecotourism.

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
Both gender and social equality issues are seriously considered by “Vaghatin” CBO. Women participation in the project will be encouraged since operation and maintenance of the fish nursery doesn’t imply hard physical work. Therefore, it is anticipated that at least half of the permanent staff of the nursery will be female.
Capacity - Building Component
Capacity-building is one of the most important components of the initiative both in the initial phase and during the project implementation. Special training will be delivered for fish nursery operation and maintenance staff. The other capacity-building component is conditioned by the project agro-ecotourism development potential, which implies alternative income-generating opportunities for community members. At least 50 members from Vaghatin community will be trained on biodiversity and biodiversity-friendly livelihood practices.
