Energy efficient municipality – part 4
Municipalities in Macedonia can not relay any more on the government to pay the local expanses, now they have a new and very expansive obligation to manage and pay for there own energy consumption. Macedonia has a limited source of commercial energy recourse and in the future they have to relay on the imported energy. To take over the measures of energy efficiency it will alleviate the air pollution and the addiction of imported energy, it will increase the duration of domestic reserves and prolong the need of investments in a new energy infrastructure (which will use fossil full). Until now our experiences thru the realization of energy efficiency projects (for example insulation of buildings with silicon strips, exchanging the ordinary light bulbs with energy efficient light bulbs, etc.), as wall as promotion of renewable sources of energy (installation of solar systems, construction of solar systems on the Principe Do It Yourself) are very positive and they make us think to continue, as wall as expansion of this activities.
Encouraged by the success and experience gathered from the previous 3 projects “Energy efficient municipality – Jegunovce, Shuto Orizari, Centar”, the executive board of NGO Proaktiva decided that the principals of sustainability (i.e. energy efficiency and renewable energy) can be implemented in another municipality in Macedonia. We have chosen the municipality of Debarca because the municipality is small and rural, with 5.507 inhabitants in 30 villages.

Energy efficiency and utilization of local renewable energy resources has been indicated as a one of the priorities in the negotiations with the Municipalities.
We decided that to achieve best results we have to make a necessary insulations and installations in the following buildings:
• Municipality of Debarca
• POU Debarca - Trebenishte

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Based on the assessment of the existing condition of energy consumption in the buildings, a range of energy-efficient measures were undertaken: reconstruction, isolation and replacement of old wooden windows & external doors with new & replacing old with energy efficient bulbs: 50 energy efficient light bulbs in buildings & 670 streets lights, 17 Tonnes of CO2 decreased or avoided by energy efficient and renewable energy technologies introduced by SGP Project
Capacity - Building Component
Local population skills and knowledge have been used during the project implementation, especially during installation of the solar equipment. Besides, the project specialists handed over knowledge on how the resource saving technologies, and methods of rational use of nature resources can be used by local communities all over the region.
