Protection of domestic breed of sheep – Karakachanian sheep
Protection of domestic breed of sheep – Karakachanian sheep
Activities connected with protection of biodiversity and management of animal genetic resources must provide preservation of genomes and gene pool of indigenous populations. Different types of programs and measures which support of animal genetic resources should ensure that local breeds in danger of being lost to breed are predominantly kept in environment that is typical for breeding of these species. In order to provide appropriate effective population size main aim is female animal which are noted in herd books. Activities from project grant MKD/SGP/OP5/Y2/CORE/BD/12/10 provided all necessary conditions for preparation, application and implementation of full Project concept which now is developed in complete Project. All names for Karakachanian sheep (Karakachanka, Black-Vlahian, Sara-Krachanian, Kuco-Vlahian, Albano-Vlahian and Karatsaniko) are associated with the name of the breeders of this sheep ethnic minority Vlahs. This breed has no concrete breeding region and often is breed in the most extensive region of the Republic of Macedonia. It is very resistant, modest and adaptive in extensive breeding conditions, vital and energetic animal, with lowest milk yield (24-26 l) per lactation. The coat color is grey-black and brown-black, but some time pure white individuals appear. The head is small with well spirally developed horns in rams, most of ewes are hornless (7-10% are horned). The wool is rough, coarse and long (up to 26 cm). The average weight of ewes is up to 33 kg and of rams is up to 44 kg. Regarding the tail length this breed belongs to the group of short tailed sheep.
In the fifties years of the past century 222.000 heads of this strain was breed in the R. Macedonia which was 10% of total sheep population, ten years later the number of Karakachanian decrease at 100.000 heads. Today this sheep population is classified as endangered population therefore one flock collection (70 heads) of this strain is ex situ conserved in the frame of programmed for protection of biodiversity in domesticated animals in the Republic of Macedonia.
Main aim of Project is protection of Karakachanian sheep population which is according to FAO criteria in critical degree of endargement. This main aim is tidily connected with chain of measures which can provide protection, characterization of animal genetic resources of this population. Application of overall project activities will provide at same time sustainable use of animal genetic resources trough set of interconnected measures and activities (breed characterization, monitoring of growth and development of individuals, establishment of nucleus flocks, solidarity distribution of offspring after establishment and sexual maturity of nucleus flocks, with establishment of recognized breeding organization and at the very end with appropriate project activities promotion.
