Yenangla Water catchment Rehabilitation and Forest Fire Management, Bartsham, Trashigang
Yenangla is the major watershed area of Bartsham Gewog, located at the distance of about 10 kilometers from Gewog Administration Office. It is about 5 hours walk from the road point. The watershed has five main water sources and provide drinking and irrigation water services to over 222 households of Bartsham and public institutions, namely, Chador Lhakhang, Bartsham Middle Secondary School and Basic Health Unit. Besides Bartsham, Yenangla watershed also provide drinking and irrigation water services to Bidung Gewog

The availability of water, both for drinking and irrigation has reduced over the years. The volume of water from the above sources have significantly decreased, and the Gewog face drinking water shortage during the winter months, which was not the case earlier. Further, the population face acute shortage of irrigation water for paddy cultivation, and more land are left fallow over the period.
Concerned by the serious implications of drying water sources on the livelihood and food security of the population, the Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) Yenangla Water Catchment Protection Group (YWCPG) carried out the project “Yenangla Water catchment Rehabilitation and Forest Fire Management, Bartsham” with support from GEF Small Grants Programme Bhutan, UNDP. The project aimed to achieve the following:
1. Protect the community water sources in Bartsham
2. Rehabilitation of the degraded parts/areas of Yenangla watershed
3. Build institutional capacity of local communities/farmers
4. Protection of agriculture land from degradation/flash floods
