Sustainable water resources management, Bidung, Trashigang
Bidung geog is located 33km to the northwest of Trashigang Dzong covering an area of 47.6 sq km and it is at an altitude of 1200-3000masl with chirpine and broadleaved forest. Due to increasing population and pressure and heavy dependence on forest and other natural resources have increased the problem of watershed degradation. There is frequent occurrence of landslides, erosion of topsoil and shortage of water supply for both drinking and irrigating purposes. The watershed degradation not only poses serious threat to our natural environment but also to the survival of people living in upland as well as downstream areas. In addition, Kakaney Lhakhang (monastery) is one small institute which contribute to huge consumption of natural resources i.e. forest for firewood and currently they consume 2- 3 truckloads of firewood monthly.

Recognizing the importance to protect and manage the watershed, the project “Sustainable water resources management’ was carried with Bidung Water Catchment Protect Group. The objectives of project were protection of water sources and farmland, reduce heavy independence on forest for firewood and sensitize, facilitate and implement sustainable practices of land and farmland management.
The project protected and safeguarded seventeen numbers of water sources covering an area of more than 250 acres. The prevention of land erosion measures were sustainably carried through bio-engineering methods; plantation of native tree saplings carried out and farm land were protected through causeways and retaining walls. These activities have resulted in protection and land management of more than 250 acres of land and protection of water sources thereby resulting in prevention of loss of biodiversity, prevention of land and watershed degradation and ensuring continuous flow of drinking water. Through project, improved and efficient cooking stoves was provided to monastery which have reduced their fuel wood consumption by 50%.
