Promoting locally feasible low-carbon technologies through introduction of a natural convective solar drying model
The project aims to introduce a model type of natural convective solar dryer for fruits and vegetables, as an environmentally sound low-cost alternative to electric and natural gas dryers, ensuring substantial savings through its application.
The project plans to construct 4 pilot dryers with automatic temperature control and 25 kg/day capacity, and test them in different climatic zones of Armenia. This enables drying out quickly, without decreasing the qualitative properties of dried produce. The dryers will be operated by the beneficiary farmers on a cooperative basis selling the products in the domestic market, particularly for preparation of ecologically clean food and beverages.

The traditional electrical dryers, depending on the model/capacity, use heat energy 2.5-3.5 kWh per hour ( These devices consume 60-80 kWh of electricity daily, which is about 6 USD in monetary equivalent. Given that the primary drying process takes 4-5 days, the cost of the product (per 200 kg of raw material) increases by 24 USD.

The application of a model type of natural convective solar dryers will result in decrease of the cost of dried fruits by about 14-20 percent, which will ensure their market competitiveness. This will enable saving monthly about 46 USD due to decrease of electric energy consumption.

Taking into account the fact that fruit-drying period takes about 4 months, the saved amount (585 USD) will be directed to buying about 2,000 kg of raw material to produce about 260 kg of a ready-made product, or in monetary terms about 183 USD.
The project’s goal is to promote application of low-carbon technologies at community level in Shirak Region through introduction of new type model of natural convective solar dryers.
