Rehabilitation of agricultural lands through reconstruction of the irrigation canal and introduction of sustainable land management practices in Achanan and Syunik communities of Syunik region
The project aims to prevent heavy metal contamination of soil and food crops caused by continuous irrigation with river water polluted by mining industry through renovation of irrigation canal and introduction of SLM practices in Achanan and Syunik communities. With the assistance of the OSCE Programme Implementation Presence (PIP) in Syunik it is envisaged to address environmental and food safety issues and create sustainable income generation opportunities in a non-mining sector.
The problem solution implies reconstruction of the non-operating irrigation canal, which will allow intake of irrigation water from the river - upper the point source of pollution. The project will result in prevention of further pollution of agricultural lands by discharge water from Arstvanik tailing reservoir that has high concentration of heavy metals and toxic elements and causes land degradation and contamination of agricultural production.
The project will also help farmers to avoid financial losses because consumers refuse to buy agricultural products from the suppliers of these villages. It is expected that availability of clean irrigation water in parallel with introduction of SLM practices will considerably expand land areas under cultivation and promote sustainable use in target communities.
The project activities envisage development of a renovation design, reconstruction of 4 km canal connecting Norashenik River to agricultural lands in Achanan and Syunik communities, and training program on sustainable land use, intensive agriculture, and safe food production for 30 farmers.
The project will also contribute to enhancement of local and regional capacities on sustainable land use and water management practices and production of safe food in the areas affected by mining activities.
OSCE PIP team assisted Kapan Area Development Foundation, the SGP grantee NGO, in the project development and formulation, as well as leveraged cash co-financing (US$9,090) from the OSCE budget.
