Kampar River Community Development Project
Kampar River Community Development Project
Sg. Kampar is about 6km from the current town centre. However, Kampar is growing, given the location of University Tengku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and other major projects in its midst. The current development of Kampar town is directed north, towards Gopeng. Currently Sg. Kampar is only 3km from its urban fringe. In the next 5 years, it is likely that urban development will encroach on its southern banks. These various features, have created a situation where the river is utilised by a numerous and varied stakeholder community, all of whom have a crucial stake in its sustainability. The members of this community, however, currently do not work together to ensure the sustainability of the river system on which they all depend. This is due to a lack of a consensual mechanism to enable the various stakeholders to meet and discuss issues of common interest. Coupled with the absence of information on the environmental and biodiversity values of the river, there is a fragmented and uncoordinated use of the river, which is likely to undermine its rich environmental quality and productivity. The aims of the Kampar River Community Development Project by Persatuan Alam Sekitar Perak (PASK) are to 1) conduct a comprehensive assessment of biodiversity and economic values of Sg. Kampar, 2) identify various stakeholders working within and immediately adjacent to the river; 3) to empower and organize riverine communities through workshops and seminars, hence creating the multistakeholders Kampar River Community. The expected outputs include 1) An enhanced awareness among stakeholder communities in the Kampar and Gopeng with respect to the ecological and environmental values of the Sg. Kampar; 2) A community guidebook on the biodiversity and economic use values of the Sg. Kampar; and 3) A roundtable mechanism named Sg. Kampar Community that would brings these diverse groups together to discuss issues relating to the sustainable management of the river.
