Protection of Marine Resources Through Environmental Awareness Program and Patrolling.
Protection of Marine Resources Through Environmental Awareness Program and Patrolling.
In 2003, the Sabah State Government approved the proposal to gazette an area of 1.1 million hectares as Tun Mustapha Park (TMP), located in northern Sabah State. The proposed park will include districts of Kudat, Kota Marudu, Pitas and more than 50 islands. This proposed park is rich in marine biodiversity, with extensive coastal and marine ecosystems such as mangrove forests, seagrass beds and coral reefs. However, the marine life and ecosystem within the proposed park is experiencing threats by uncontrolled fishing and the usage of destructive fishing methods.
The proposed Tun Mustapha Park aims to achieve three objectives (Jumin et al. 2008):
(i) To conserve marine biodiversity in mangrove forests, coral reefs, and coastal waters,
(ii) To enable sustainable development of traditional and commercial fisheries, and aquaculture (cage-culture and seaweed culture), and
(iii) To alleviate poverty of coastal villagers in the area.

This project will be conducted by Banggi Youth Club (BYC) in Banggi Island which includes villages namely Perpaduan, Karakit, Singgamata, Patanunan, Balak-Balak, Seronding, Damaran Maliyu and Batu Layar and 1 schools namely SMK Banggi.

Objectives of this project are:

(i) To raise awareness and increase the involvement of communities through Land Awareness and Conservation
(ii) To support the establishment of TMP through Marine Awareness and Conservation.

Train the Trainers workshop was conducted for Banggi Youth Club members to implement the program to improve their capacity building on how to do activity. From that workshop, five Green Lifestyle modules were created which are Anti-Fish Bombing and Use of Cyanide, Anti-Plastic, Composting, Tree Planting and Recycle. The modules will use as guide in implementation of activity.
