Creating Awareness in REDD + and enhancing the capacities of local farmers in climate smart agriculture in Tandoo and Kabasi in the Mamprugu Moaduri District
The prime objective of the project is to raise the awareness on climate change, and REDD+ policy among local civil society and build the capacities of rural famers to adapt climate smart agriculture in Mamprugu Moaduri District.

The specific objectives are

1. To educate local civil society [farmers] on the national climate change and REDD+ policies for effective engagement in climate change issues in the district.
2. To build the capacity of the local farmers in climate smart agriculture for sustainable land management.
3. To support trained farmers on alternative livelihood enterprises [income generation] activities in the form of improved livestock support, and agro-processing [shea butter].

Project Outputs and Activities

RESULT 1:
Capacities of 50 local civil society groups [farmers] built and strengthened on the national climate change and REDD+ policies for effective engagement in climate change issues in the district.

Planned Activities:
Undertake awareness creation and sensitization on climate change in two [2] beneficiary communities. An intensive climate change education would be organized in each community. The services of two resource persons would be contracted mainly from the FSD/MOFA or credible civil society organization specialized in climate change issues. Workshop procedures would be participatory and interactive. The beneficiaries would be taken through areas such as Overview of Climate Change- what is it, the drivers of climate change, impacts, adaptation, and some mitigation measures. Global, regional and the national response to climate change, why is Africa and for that matter Mamprugu Moaduri District most Vulnerable to Climate Change, Adaptation Action for Africa to mention but a few. Local language [Mamprusi], Photographs, dramas and video shows would be used to enhance the understanding of climate change associated issues among the participants.

- Undertake capacity building training on REDD+ policy/mechanism to enhance the communities’ capacity and understanding on REDD+ policy in Ghana. Themes such as the overview of REDD+ mechanism,- what is it, reasons for developing the idea, status of REDD+ mechanism in Ghana, agencies responsible for its implementation, supporters of the idea, benefits of the policy/mechanism, how would communities participate, benefits sharing issues etc would be explained in local languages to participants.
- Undertake capacity building training on national climate change policy [NCCP] to enhance the communities’ capacity and understanding on national climate change policy in Ghana. Themes such as the overview of policy document,- what is it, process of the policy development, reasons for developing the policy document, status of NCCP in Ghana, agencies responsible for its implementation etc. would be explained in local languages to participants.

- Undertake Disaster risk management training to enhance the communities’ capacity and understanding in managing flood related disasters which is linked to impact of climate change. Integrated water resource management training-the practice of making prudent decisions and taking actions while considering multiple viewpoints of how water should be managed would complement the disaster risk reduction management training. Resource person specifically from NADMO and water resources commission would be brought in to train the two community members.

- Undertake capacity building training on food and agricultural policy [FASDEP&METASEP] to enhance the communities’ capacity and understanding on national agriculture policy in Ghana. Themes such as the overview of policy document,- what is it, process of the policy development, reasons for developing the policy document, the implementation issues, status of FASDEP and METASEP in Ghana, agencies responsible for its implementation etc. would be explained in local languages to participants.

- Undertake public outreach education through local FM radio station is part of the strategies to extend climate change education and REDD+ mechanism policy to the general public using local FM station.

- Support at least two community members to participate in climate change/natural resources management related meetings at the district, regional and national levels to learn and also share their experience with development experts on climate change whiles voicing out their concerns for help when things are not going well. They would return to brief their community members about what they learnt to enhance the larger society understanding of climate change and its adverse impacts.

RESULT 2:
60 farmers’ capacities built and strengthened for sustainable tree resources management to limit the effects of desertification and deforestation

- Identify survey and demarcate degraded lands for planting of seedlings in degraded areas in each community. The degraded areas would survey using participatory approach - Resources persons would come from FSD using the community members as supporting staffs. For the purpose of land sourcing, the project has already organized community sensitization meetings in Tandoo and Kabasi communities where discussions were held between the chiefs and people about this activity. The chiefs and people indicated their willingness and commitment to the implementation of the activity to rejuvenate the already degraded lands

- Procure and plant grafted mango mostly in degraded area under the management of individual farmers- Currently vegetative cover around most of the communities in the Mamprugu Moaduri District is seriously depleted adding to desertification and climate change. As most vegetative cover is depleted, the communities become defenseless against rain storms –roofs are reaped off and food insecure. Therefore badly degraded sites around the communities would be surveyed and planted with grafted mangos. The grafted mangos would be procured from a local expert who be contracted to supply and also trained the farmers on how to graft mangos to leave knowledge behind.

- Train and equipped fire volunteer squad-The northern savannah eco-system over the years has been experiencing annual devastating Bushfires. The activity is necessary to equip the trained individuals to enable them protect the planted seedlings that would be established in the 3 communities. 50 community members made up of 25 from each community would be invited to participate in the training. Out of this 60 individuals made up of 20 from each would be properly equipped to form the fire volunteer squads.

Results 3
60 farm families supported with alternative livelihoods support [income generation] activities in the form of livestock support, agro-processing [Shea butter].

- To train and support 120 women and men with alternative livelihood scheme [income generation] activities in the form of livestock production as means of reducing local people’s over-dependence on the natural vegetation, and also stopping the rural women from engaging in KAYAYO. It is seen as participation incentive to compensate for their whole time and resources devoted in the project activities. The action will be carried out in collaboration with a MOFA and local bee-keeping experts. The project would assist farmers to source for, identify, and exploit market opportunities for their livestock.

- Agro-processing training-under these category vulnerable women be put together in groups and trained in quality shea butter processing and business management to enable them practice. They would be linked to markets for their products
