Sustaining climate resilient agricultural practices within the Avatime portion of the Weto COMDEKS landscape
Sustaining climate resilient agricultural practices within the Avatime portion of the Weto COMDEKS landscape
The Project Problem:
The Avatime Traditional Area is traditionally an agricultural community. The area forms the highest point of human habitation within the WETO landscape. However, over the years, a large portion of the agricultural lands of the mountain range has seen a rapid degradation and reduction in its forest cover. The causes of this deforestation are multiple including unsustainable agricultural practices on the high slopes of the mountain using slash and burn and extensive farm rotation, annual bush fires, uncontrolled hunting of wildlife, illegal chainsaw operation chainsaw operators and other human activities that destroy indigenous trees like Odum, Mahogany, Ofram and other herbal plants. The effects of these practices are the depletion of the forest cover, drying out of water bodies and the water sheds depletion of natural systems of the mountain range and erosion of the eco-tourism potential of the area.

Project Goal

The main goal of the project is to promote communities involvement in the sustainable management of natural resources for increased production, wealth creation and restoration of biodiversity. The project purpose is to support local farmers to adopt climate resilient agricultural practices that will revive the traditional conservation and production practices for wealth creation and restoration of biodiversity.

The main Objectives are:
• To create and establish awareness and responsibilities on the establishment of Avatime CREMA (community resource management area) and promote its sustainable management
• to re-introduce the cultivation of indigenous tree crops (cocoa, oil palm, coffee, and non-timber forest products) under agroforestry technologies and water and soil fertility improvement technologies
• to harness the eco tourism potential of the Avatime traditional area.
