Multiple Land Use Practices for Biodiversity Conservation and Fire Prevention through an Integrated Production System within the Sanga-Tsito cluster of the Weto landscape
Project Problem
The main environmental challenges confronting the landscape could be summarised as:
• Unsustainable farming practices
• Increasing habitat destruction (biodiversity loss and reduced ecosystem services)
• Inadequate livelihood support systems
• Weak institutional capacity (to support conservation and production)
Project Goal
The overall goal of this project is to promote sustainable management and utilization of natural resources for increased production, the restoration of biodiversity, wealth creation and continuous flow of ecosystem services.
Project Purpose:
This project intends to develop and sustain livelihood and well being of the local communities, towards the adoption of multiple land use practices for biodiversity conservation and fire prevention through an integrated production system to enhance the Weto landscape ecosystem services and poverty reduction.
Project Objectives
The main project objectives are to:
1. To promote natural and semi–natural habitats and ecosystem services within Weto landscape
2. To promote sustainable organic agricultural practices across the landscape to enhance and revive traditional conservation and production practices and adoption of new technologies.
3. To develop livelihood and well being of target social groups within Weto Landscape sustained and enhanced through the development of livelihood enterprises in line with local tradition and culture.
FIRST QUARTER REPORT
i.50ha of farm land at Sanga, Dededo Sawyer Kodzi and Tsito has been demarcated and placed under degraded forests for natural regeneration
ii. 37 females and 23 males are members of the CNA nursery group that has been formed
iii. 50 farm families have been supported with skills and knowledge in organic farming to establish organic agro forestry farms as a means of livelihood
iv. 5 farmers have also been supported financially with agro inputs such as cutlass, rain coats and organic fertilizers
v. 40 teak seedlings and 40 mangoes have been planted in four schools, and 20 students from each school participated in the planting with the supervision of a female teacher from each school and staff of CNA to serve as a wind belt.
