Introduction of integrated land and water management practices to sustain livelihoods in Basen community
The project aims to contribute to the improvement of agro-ecosystem services in Basen community and reduction of land degradation through introduction of sustainable land and water resources management practices and effective use of biological wastes.
The community is located at the foot of the Pambak Mountains, at an altitude of 1,650 m above sea level. The climate is temperate mountainous with long and cold winters, and steady snow cover. There are strong winds, frequent snowstorms and frosts. Summer is cool and comparatively damp. The annual precipitation is 500-600.
In the frames of the project it is envisaged to:
- Restore 18 spring headwaters at the foothills of Matner mountain in Basen community and construct water intake facilities, which will help to avoid waterlogging of 18 hectares of pasture and meadowlands, irrigate 7.8 hectares of arable lands and 28 homestead lands of the community;
- Introduce the technology of pellet production out of biological wastes and provide the community kindergarten with minimum 5 tons of granular biomass annually;
- Develop an integrated management plan of land and water resources for Basen community, which will be adopted by the community administration;
- Conduct educational and awareness raising campaigns on integrated management of land and water resources, as well as summarizing the lessons learnt during the project implementation, experience exchange and dissemination; and
- Raise awareness of local population on multiple agro-ecosystem services critical for maintaining local livelihoods and the global environmental issues addressed by the GEF.
