National Capacity Building for CBOs CSOs & NGOs, for sustainable projects and economic growth
National Capacity Building for CBOs CSOs & NGOs, for sustainable projects and economic growth
The GCIC has identified a social need to assist CBOs, CSOs and NGOs in capacity development which would directly contribute to sustainable projects and to economic growth in the long term taking into account the current and future effects of climate change on small island states. The training would also assist these groups to move from the informal network into the more formal network so as to benefit from the advantages of being properly established and following correct project management which will contribute to making them more sustainable and in the long term, contributing to the overall economy. Traditional methods of simply holding training workshops will not be the way to create changes in the mindset of persons. A more comprehensive approach which includes a combination of some training along with post-workshop exercise /activities needs to be involved in truly building capacity in this area.

Many of the conventional programmes focus on the training workshops without including a proper component of post-workshop assistance. Consequently, the attrition rate of the participants is usually high. The Chamber seeks to develop a programme that will strengthen these businesses in ways so that the traditional weaknesses will be addressed.

The strategies used would be a combination of training and a period of post-workshop assistance, monitoring and hand holding following the training programme. The training would include: Registration of Community Based Organisations (CSOs), Business Planning and Goal setting, Basic Financial Management and monitoring, Record Keeping, knowledge management, co – financing, accessing funds, and proposal writing.

Objectives are to:
(i) To register groups by the end of the project
(ii)To train/build capacity in the specified areas, so that by the end of the project CBOs, NGOs & CSOs would be able to effectively manage their groups (CSO, NGO’s etc.).
(iii) To establish a mentoring programme for CBOs, NGOs & CSOs by the end of the programme
