Sustainable food management project in adaptation to climate change through establishing floating gardens and platforms
Sustainable food management project in adaptation to climate change through establishing floating gardens and platforms
The NGO works out of Wewak with a committee based in Wom in the Angoram District of East Sepik Province. A full grant of a total of US$50,000.00 was conditionally approved by the SGP National Steering Committee Members during the National Steering Committee meeting held in Alotau on the 08 of July 2016. The proposal was only given full approval after the NGO met the NSC recommendations. Prior to the full proposal, a planning grant of US$3,000.00 this equates to PGK8, 607.00 as calculated using the UN exchange rate of 2.869 for December 2015. The grant was specifically used to conduct community consultations and drafting of the full proposal. As clearly stated in the SGP Standard Operating Procedure, the total project amount should not exceed US$50,000.00 therefore for the case of HEAPS, the total approved amount of US$50,000 will be reduced by US$3,000 which brings the amount showing in the MOA as US$47,000.00. The grant will be disbursed in the ration of 30:30:30:10%.

The full proposal will be used to address the threat to food security as a result of the impact of Climate Change. The project will benefit 11 communities along the Sepik River, which comprise of a total population of more than 9,000. The main problem identified is the frequent flooding during the monsoon season (December – March/April) thus resulting in damage to the food gardens and other resources. To address this problem, through this funding support, HEAPS will be building floating food gardens to withstand both high and low tides throughout the year. Capacity building will be one of the major components for the sustainability of the project. Training will target the 8 villages along the river and are mostly affected by the impacts of flooding. There will be 96 people (32 women, 32 youths, 32 men) who will be receiving training for attending the floating gardens and platform training.
