Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

At the beginning of the project, there was very little capacity for waste management in protected areas. To do this, the project purchased inventories that would help reduce waste generation and manage waste entirely. The team of volunteers remains active and completes new horizons after the project is completed. A project has been prepared so that the organization can participate in grant competitions.

Notable Community Participation

Most of the project activities were carried out with the involvement of young people. From the beginning, a group of volunteers has been trained in waste accounting, cleaning activities, educational and entertainment activities. An eco-camp was organized with other young people volunteering.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Nacres and New Horizons used an intensive communication approach with stakeholders to take into account the interests and benefits of these parties. The project included meetings, presentations and trainings for stakeholders.

Policy Impact

Nacres has worked actively with local authorities to identify gaps and opportunities related to legislation or opportunities. Based on the information received, recommendations have been prepared which are outlined in the Waste Management Plan

Project sustainability

The eagle valley, which despite its great potential, was closed to tourists because of pollution. Resolving the problem of waste management in the long run will ensure the preservation of the tourism potential of the protected areas and thus contribute to the well-being of the local population

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The information obtained during the project was reflected in the Waste Management Plan. Which together with the geo-information was provided to the Agency of Protected Areas and other stakeholders.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The involvement of the local population in the project was mainly done as a group of volunteers. In addition, project implementers, through meetings, presentations, various events and electronic media, sought to disseminate project information to all stakeholders and increase their involvement in project implementation

Gender Focus

The waste management is very new sphere for Georgia and a big challenge. The public awareness is very low on above mentioned issue. That’s why it is very important to take positive steps in field of waste management. Any action in regard of positive change means women’s participation. The main goal of the project is create and test effective waste management mechanisms on Vashlovani PAs. The members of the implemented organization are women and as implementers they will be actively involved in the process, but also it is important to involve more local women that was done by organization in waste management plane elaboration.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

With the growth of tourism in the region, its economic importance is increasing. More and more people are earning a living through tourism-related activities. Implementation of the project will increase the tourism potential of protected areas, which will positively impact the incomes of the local population and improve their social status. In addition, the ecological status of important protected areas has improved.
