Environmental education for public awareness on biodiversity protection in the Republic of Moldova
Environmental education for public awareness on biodiversity protection in the Republic of Moldova
In a changing world, affected by the anthropogenic impact, the free flow of information and the collaboration at national and international level are key elements of the common effort that humankind has to make to reduce and stop the decline of biodiversity. The conservation of biodiversity, including plant diversity, is a priority goal of humankind, which cannot be achieved without education. Besides, environmental education is an imperative requirement included in all major international strategies and conventions (CBD, Agenda 21), is a necessity in developing environmental awareness and an attitude of respect for nature. As clearly stated in a series of international documents (Convention on Biological Diversity, Agenda 21 etc.) and of the European Union (Habitats Directive, Action Plan for Botanic Gardens etc.), a number of major tasks and responsibilities are assigned to botanical gardens.
This project is focused on the main problems of plant diversity conservation through environmental education, problems that have to be solved with the help of the Botanical Garden of the Republic of Moldova.
The NGO Ecospectru, during 12 months, has been promoting the creation of the environmental education centre and has made an appeal to civil society, stating that the Botanical Garden should play a vital role in environmental education. The activities planned by the NGO Ecospectru in the Botanical Garden of Chisinau offer young people a chance to learn more about plants, their habitats, the major threats to plant diversity, its role in everyday life and the importance of the rational use of plant resources. The Environmental Education Centre in the framework of Botanical Garden can play a significant role in shaping a progressive attitude toward a democratic approach to environmental decision-making.
The Botanical Garden (Institute) of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova is visited by a large number of people of various ages and has all the necessary conditions to achieve many goals regarding environmental education. The plant collections, the library and the herbarium of the Botanical Garden can be used as teaching materials as part of a non-formal education programme. Through this project, the Botanical Garden plans to develop as an environmental education centre for pupils and students, to provide information, for the general public, about plants using various interesting and entertaining methods, to organize meetings and debates on environmental issues for a varied audience. These objectives will be achieved with the help of the qualified staff of the Botanical Garden (Institute) of the ASM, by developing an environmental education plan that addresses well-defined target groups and with the help of the appropriate equipment and technical facilities. Considering the complexity of environmental education in the field of biodiversity protection, PA Ecospectru aims, by starting this project, at providing knowledge and, at the same time, at forming values, attitudes and an environmentally responsible behaviour.
The advantages of environmental education provided within the framework of the Botanical Garden are numerous and among them, there is the possibility to acquire knowledge based on concrete examples, the enrichment of knowledge on various aspects of environmental protection, concrete possibilities for action (plant protection and plant cultivation programs for children), the development of the sense of citizenship through active participation in community life, the contribution to raising awareness and understanding of complex situations or realities, the educational influence on a wider public, as well as leisure opportunities (guided tours in the plant world, exhibitions etc.).
Although some actions have been undertaken, in the Republic of Moldova, to promote the education of the population in the field of biodiversity protection for sustainable development, there is no environmental education centre with a methodological framework.
In the context of biodiversity protection problems, which are becoming increasingly acute and relevant, the role of the Botanical Garden, through the creation of an environmental education centre, is of major importance.
