PROMOTION OF SAW DUST BRIQUETTES AND WIDER USE OF EFFICIENT ENERGY SAVING STOVES FOR ENVIRONMENT CONSERVATION IN KILIMANJARO REGION
Project’s Primary Objective:

To expand production capacity of briquette production with the view to promoting wider use of briquettes instead of woodfuel.

Implementation Strategies:

1. Rehabilitate briquette production plant
2. Increase procurement of sawdust
3. Overhaul a 10-ton truck for transporting saw dust
4. Establish two energy saving stoves at two schools for demonstration

Project Sustainability Strategies:

• The briquette technology is sustainable because of the following characteristics: (i) when compared with woodfuel, briquettes are cheaper by 40% (KIDT, 2010) (ii) less smoke emissions as compared to charcoal or woodfuel (ii) makes cooking environment cleaner (iv) Easy to store (v) ash from briquettes may be used as fertilizer in paddy farms
• Saw dust, which is the principle raw material in briquette production can be found easily.
• The demo briquette stoves will disseminate the technology at all times

Anticipated project results:

• Deforestation through illegal logging for woodfuel will be reduced (Extent of reduction to be determined)
• (i) Carbon emissions avoided through the use of briquettes as compared to the use of woodfuel (Volume of carbon emissions avoided to be calculated) (ii) Volume of carbon sequestrated by trees that will not be cut down for woodfuel to be calculated
• Briquette has less smoke compared to charcoal or woodfuel. Therefore, indoor pollution to users will be reduced
• Use of briquette stoves by Secondary Schools will reduce budget for woodfuel (on average) by 70%.
