Alternative community based livelihoods-layers (chicken that lay eggs) and awareness on the protection of Lake Kutubu WMA
Alternative community based livelihoods-layers (chicken that lay eggs) and awareness on the protection of Lake Kutubu WMA
This community based organisation was established to manage the Lake Kutubu Wildlife Management Area, covering Lake Kutubu and 1000 hectares of surrounding forest, located in Southern Highlands within the biologically rich Kikori Basin. The organisation has been responsible for the day to day management of the protected area since its gazettal in 1992 and is now seeking assistance from SGP to support its ongoing wildlife management actions. This project will support the organisations actions to address threats to endemic freshwater fish species that the growing population relies on as a source of protein. SGP is giving a planning grant to facilitate preparation of a full proposal that will provide broader narrative on how the alternative livelihood option will reduce pressures on endemic fish populations and preserve the global significance of this freshwater lake (second largest in PNG) and recognised wetland of international importance.
