Supporting farmers of Kelampoble and Gbenfu communities to adopt and practice agroecological innovations to enhance food security and integrated crop-livestock farming systems within the Black Volta Basin
The primary objective
The project seeks to educate farmers to avoid the use of agro-chemicals and support farmers to adopt agroecological innovative models including agricultural/organic farming practice and integrated crop-livestock farming system in the production of crops.
The specific objectives
• To educate farmers to understand the risk and dangers associated with the uses of agro-chemicals.
• Train and support farmers to practice conservation agricultural measures.
• Train and support farmers to practice agro-forestry module
• Train and support farmers with environmentally friendly alternative livelihoods options-such bee-keeping, livestock rearing, soap and pomade making skills etc
• Train and support farmers to undertake Village saving and loans schemes
The specific results or outcomes
• 200 farmers educated to understand and avoid the risks and dangers associated with uses of agro-chemicals.
• 100 farmers trained and supported to practice conservation agricultural measures
• 100 farmers trained and supported to practice agro-forestry module
• 100 farmers trained and supported with environmentally friendly alternative livelihoods options-such bee-keeping, livestock rearing, soap and pomade making skills etc
• 3 fire volunteer squads formed, equipped and trained
• 200 farmers trained and supported to undertake Village saving and loans schemes
Description of Project Activities
1. 200 farmers educated to understand and to avoid the risks and dangers associated with the uses of agro-chemicals. This will be done in the form of community debar where all community members are assembled and trained/educated using resource persons from recognized institutions. Topics to be treated include, what agro-chemicals means, origin and its formations, the nature of the subsistence, types, the immediate and land lasting effects on the farmers’ health, environment and climate.
2. 100 farmers trained and supported to practice conservation agricultural measures-here serous farmers will be selected after conservation agriculture sensitization. The farmers will be assessed to identify specific conservation agriculture measures required by each farmer. They will then be grouped and trained using resource persons from recognized institutions. Content such as crop rotation, mix cropping, compost building, household waste treatment, contour ploughing, row planting skills etc are developed for this training
3. 100 farmers trained and supported to practice agro-forestry module-tree planting is an essential component of the project designed. The farmers will receive in basic flying nursery establishment and management. This will enable them to integrate trees into their crops. Training such as filling of polypus, nursing seedlings, transplanting, recommended planting spaces for different types of crops or agro-forestry modules etc. will be given by the project
4. 100 farmers trained and supported with environmentally friendly alternative livelihoods options-such bee-keeping, livestock rearing, soap and pomade making skills etc. –farmers who will be selected to undertake the forest management schemes would be rewarded to practice some environmentally friendly alternative livelihoods options-such bee-keeping, livestock rearing, soap and pomade making. They will receive training and starter pack support to enable them start on their own.
5. 200 farmers trained and supported to undertake Village saving and loans schemes-this will increase farmers’ income and help them to take up the process when the project comes to an end. The interested farmers would be grouped and trained using resource persons from notable organization. Training themes such as group dynamics managements, money literacy, simple banking, accounts opening, the objectives of operation village saving and loans schemes etc. would be given to trainees
6. Form, equip and train 3 fire volunteer squads-three firefighting volunteer squads made up 25 in each community would be formed, equipped and trained to serve as anti-bush and fire prevention guards in the three communities. They would be trained by Ghana National Fire Services.
7. Capacity building –public environmental and bio-diversity conservation education in 3 communities –for farmers to appreciate and conserve their environmental resources, a day’s sensitization would be conducted for each community. Resource persons would be drawn from institutions such as MOFA, EPA and FC to undertake the training activities.
8. Train and support women in income generating activities such as shea butter processing etc during off farming season in the 3 communities-to diversify the rural women income and reduce their over exploitation of the tree resources, training in shea/dawadawa, soap and pomade making would be conducted to support interested women under the project. they would be given skills to produce, package and market to support their household incomes
9. Monitoring and Evaluation of project activities –monitoring would be undertaken throughout the project to ensure quality delivering of key activities and targets

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
Agricultural practices has remained rudimentary resulting in low crop yield and productivity in the Kelampoble and Gbenfu area. Farmers lack the capability of adopting improved farming methods. The project will build the capacities of the farmers conservation agriculture and adoption of organic farming.
