Borax was adopted in place of centrifuge and vortex technology to replace mercury.
Held two training workshops for artisans in in Banda Nkwanta on how to use borrax instead of mercury

The project aims at managing waste and chemicals for community wealth creation and sustainable environmental management within the Black Volta Basin, which seeks to build capacities of artisanal miners and local communities to reduce the use of mercury through the use of the borax method in gold amalgamation, reduce the release of POPs, ODS and other chemicals through improving the fuel plant developed for waste plastic to diesel/kerosene/gas generation to be environmentally friendly.

The plant has been modified and tested to produce gas petrol and diesel while the high compressing cylinders would be procured in future to collect the gas being produced. Some limitations were observed as a result of a National Ban on Small-Scale mining referred to us Galamsey
The community members and the artisans were also trained on wealth creation and sustainable environmental management in the project area
Two workshops organised. About 42 persons attended both training and workshop which included students, local implementer and a teacher comprising 6 females and 36 males.

PROJECT PERFORMANCE

The project piloted the management of waste and chemicals for community wealth creation and sustainable environmental management in Banda Nkwanta. The project built local capacities of miners in plastic waste conversion into 4 different types of fuels; petrol, diesel, gasoline, kerosene using the pyrolysis process. The plastic waste was the main source of raw materials to produce the fuel. The pyrolysis (the processes of converting the plastic waste into the four different types of fuel) is still undergoing research Forty youth have been trained to invest in processing plastic waste into diesel, petrol and grease on commercial basis.
The approach has: a) facilitated more cost-effective and transparent way of managing the plastic menace; b) enhanced access to knowledge on best available technologies on waste valorization; c) made it easier to find/link to solution providers and off-takers; d) stimulated further research and innovation on waste valorization in relation to emerging demand and options; and e) built capacity of key personnel (local government, private sector, NGOs and Academia) to enhance sanitation management particularly at the decentralized level.

The model that has emerged from the project calls for a change in human behaviour and approach to waste management built on the following principles:
? an efficient waste collection system where sorting of waste is done at household levels.
? a decentralized and efficient Multiple Mobile Shredder to shreds and reduce the plastic particles into smaller sizes.
? Segregation -building segregation bays where the bagged materials are separated and spread to aid in drying the moisture uses including fuel, building material.
? Setting up Mixers where the various shredded materials are mixed in a certain ratio according to the stress index of what the finish product for example reengineered lumber, pavement blocks fuel etc.
