Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

A media campaign that will include visits to the schools and to the farm as well as the setting up of social media sites to promote climate smart agro-ecological farming.

Notable Community Participation

Hands on training will be done in the form of workshops, seminars, field tours for 20 young persons on climate smart agro-ecological farming.

Capacity - Building Component

The grantee plans to achieve certification in Organic agriculture and improve the skills sets of the members of our organization in the area of youth development. EYI committee members do not have expertise in organic farming. However, EYI plans to work with experts from the ministry of agriculture, the Organic Farmers Association of Barbados and a consultant to build their knowledge capacity.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The production of organic value added products (e.g. cassava flour and compost for sale).

Gender Focus

Women will be responsible for overall management of the project, including administrative duties, promotional and marketing activities, and physical tasks. Men will be involved in physical activities of running the project which includes: planting and reaping of crops. They will also be involved in maintaining the accounting records and budgeting of all funds. The project will curtail any negative outcomes for either gender as the organization seeks to ensure that gender equality is preserved throughout the project.

Project Results

Empower Youth International was able to set up and operate a climate-smart agro-ecological model farm.

Town & Country Planning approval was obtained for the location of the training centre which will encompass a mill

Value-added products were created from the sweet potatos grown (sweet potato flour).

The milling of the product was successfully completed out of forging a business relationship with a government manufacturing company.

Empower Youth International was able to successfully host a 1 week Agri-entrepreneurship programme that train twenty-nine (29) young people surpassing our original target of 20 young people. Empower Youth Successfully host the training through a partnership with the Barbados Youth Business Trust

Young persons developed several agri-businesses at minimum cost and included a jewelry business out of mahogany, an organic smoothie business, an agricultural web design company, an organic skin care business and much more. Student received certificates of participation at a closing ceremony.

Social media sites for the farm were developed and use to inform the public on the work Grow Smart Youth Farm was doing in the community, the produce & products for sale, to inform on climate smart agriculture and much more. Empower Youth International had two (2) press releases, one (1) radio interview and two (2) TV appearances about the project. Our members also took part in Small in Small Island Future Festival and promoted climate Smart Agriculture, our Agri- entrepreneurship programmes as well as our organic produce.
