Civic involvement for a healthy environment in Ungheni municipality
Civic involvement for a healthy environment in Ungheni municipality
Ungheni City is considered to be one of the greenest and cleanest localities in the Republic of Moldova, but, however, it faces many ecological problems. It has an authorized solid waste polygon, but there are many unauthorized landfills in the residential areas that negatively affect the state of the environment, raising the pollution level of the locality. Also, the continuous increase of transport units leads to an increase of the exhaust emissions level and the greenhouse effect. The effects of climate change are in line with the global warming trend and affect the main climatic parameters (temperature, precipitation, strong winds, extreme phenomena, etc.) that affect the health of the citizens. Thus, the project aims at greening the environment by reducing energy consumption and using renewable energy sources. The main activity of the project is to install a off-grid photovoltaic plant in the inner yard of blocks of flats in the 3,5,7 Porumbescu street and 32 Al. cel Bun street, which will contribute to the reduction of energy consumption by about 20%, as well as the involvement of Ungheni City inhabitants in solving community problems.

The Center and Youth Districts in Ungheni have over 19,000 inhabitants (the indirect beneficiaries of the project) out of a total of 38,200 inhabitants, has a degraded infrastructure (sidewalks, access roads in the yard of residential blocks, obsolete public lighting, obsolete, not equipped and / or inadequately endowed leisure and entertainment areas, etc.).

The issue of interior courtyard fitting of blocks of flats in 3,5,7 Porumbescu street and 32 Al. cel Bun, located in the periphery at the intersection of the Center and Youth Districts, is an acute problem, or the arrangement of the yard of blocks of flats by modern solutions, both in terms of infrastructure for recreation and entertainment, green spaces, and from the point of view of their arrangement will increase the degree of comfort of the population, increase the attractiveness of the court, adequate aesthetic arrangement and, last but not least, to stop the degradation of the environment.

The project is a priority for the development of the city, foreseen in the strategic documents: Country Programme Strategy of GEF SGP, as the project, through its activities, contributes to the achievement of objective 3 "Promoting the demonstration, development and transfer of low-carbon technologies at community level". In this respect, there are foreseen activities such as the installation of an off-grid photovoltaic plant that will help to the achievement of the results of the Strategy: Innovative low-GHG technologies presented and successfully demonstrated at the community level.
