Climate Change Adaptation Through the cultivation of tree crops on savanna and deforested land.
The project focuses on cultivation of tree crops on degraded land and build synergies with previous projects on forest conservation. This initiative will help to reverse the alarming rate at which the communities are currently degrading the forest in search of their livelihoods. The activities of the project will strengthen the community information flow in terms of best practices on land use and management of community forestry amongst the different targeted villages. It will provide the opportunity for farmers to make field trips to the demonstration sites and learn from best practices. Their involvement will help to garner community participation which will provide the necessary support for successful project implantation. The community will be fully involved to ensure that ongoing initiatives will be beneficial and encourage them from cutting down the community forest for fire wood, charcoal and timber which they currently consider as viable economic activities without regards for the associated land degradation.
The Rationale for implementation this initiative is to provide practical solution at the community level to addressing the foreseeing climate change impact. The project demonstrates practical climate smart agriculture that can be replicated on bigger scale. The initiative will continue to improve the community forest cover, swamp development to increase the level of erosion on main land as a result of heavy down pour of rain and it will reduce land degradation.
