Rain-water Harvest in Dikshaten, Qalansia District, Socotra Governorate, Yemen
Dikshaten region consists of high rocky hill slopes and inter mountains plains that is open towards the coastal area of western Socotra at “Bab Ditror”. The high elevations are considered an extension of the Diksam plateau. The geographical description as an inter mountain plain intersected by wadies and hills and surrounded by mountains that is on the other side descend to the Sea. It’s located in Qalancia district and can be reached from the main road between Hadibu and Qalancia at Salamaho junction then it deviate from Shueb’ road to south-east into the palins.. In the vast area of the plain there are more than 25 villages. The main occupation for the population is herding with few working in the fishing sector and other economic activities. Water is the main constraint to community livelihood in the region. To secure sufficient water resources for human and animals, community progressively build up rain-water harvest cisterns “Karives”.
The project is targeting 212 families in 26 small villages with nearly 1838 inhabitants. The project will assist community to build up 58 rain-water harvest cisterns of different sizes with total capacity of 5,000 Cubic meters. Further project seeks to raise awareness among community of the importance of environment, water and vegetation management for sustainable livelihood.
