Towards Phasing Out Mercury-Added Products in Malaysia Under the Minamata Convention.
Towards Phasing Out Mercury-Added Products in Malaysia Under the Minamata Convention.
Recognizing the substantial lessons of Minamata Disease and the serious health and environmental effects resulting from mercury pollution, the objective of the Minamata Convention on Mercury is to protect the human health and the environment from anthropogenic emissions and releases of mercury and mercury compounds. It contains, in support of this objective, provisions that relate to the entire life cycle of mercury, including controls and reductions across a range of products, processes and industries where mercury is used, released or emitted. This project will focus on raising public awareness actions towards phase-out and phase-down of mercury use in products (Article 4 and Annex A) of the Minamata Convention. This is in line with the GEF SGP OP 6 which aims to prevent the exposure of humans and the environment to harmful chemicals and waste, including POPs, mercury, harmful chemicals and heavy metals. Hence this project will complement the efforts of the government of Malaysia to implement the Minamata Convention by raising public awareness and working with health care facilities to reduce and eventually eliminate the use of mercury added products.
