Altintas Great Bustard Project
The Great Bustard (Otis tarda) is known as a “vulnerable” species in Europe and in Turkey. It is estimated that a total of 800-3000 individuals still live in the wild in various parts of Anatolia. The Great Bustard is a protected species by virtue of international instruments such as the 1950 Paris and 1979 Bern Conventions. The species is under protection also in Turkey since 1977 through the decisions of the Central Hunting Commission and the Land Hunting Law (Law No: 4915)

The Great Bustard has as its habitat the meadows and fields which are used also by the peasants for animal husbandry and crop raising. This in turn brings at least from time to time the Great Bustard and men facing each other as a competitor. The aim of the project is to protect the Great Bustard population in Alt?nta?, investigate the reasons for the recent decline in numbers, agricultural activities which will support agricultural activities. Which are ecological growing crops.

This project is designed to provide a broad and deep investigation of the reasons for the decrease in the population of the Toy Bird, effective protection, habitat improvement, training of groups that are interested in this subject, and support of agricultural activities. This project is planned to be completed within 18 months, I.A.Y.H.K.D. (responsible organization-association) will prepare and implement the research. Public awareness will be ensured through training programs, and awareness raising studies, as well as example farm and pasture improvement studies, will ensure the continuation of the hound.

At the end of the project period, it is aimed to minimize the possibility of conflict between Toy Bird and human. The habitat areas of Toy Ku?u will be improved, sensitive lines will be protected during the breeding and mating periods, their habitats will be improved and they will be treated in these areas during the harvest period. Farmers and the public will be more aware of the birds and the role of the Toy Birds in the development of the region will be better understood.

The project basically requires close cooperation between local people, farmers and people and institutions related to wildlife. Working together of relevant institutions and organizations is the main condition for the success of conservation efforts.
