Public awareness on toxic effects of waste on the environment
Public awareness on toxic effects of waste on the environment
The project: "Awareness of the public about the harmful effects of waste on the environment" aims at the regeneration of the environment and the tourist attraction of Speia locality, which will lead to the modernization of the green areas, the landscape conservation, the improvement of the inhabitants' quality of life, the improvement of the attractiveness of the locality for residents and non-residents, developing infrastructure what will promote event-based tourism and changing ways of recreation in a healthy natural environment.
Speia is a village in Anenii Noi district, Republic of Moldova, with a population of 3000 inhabitants, sitting on two edges of the slope on the right bank of the Dniester River. The 34.5% are young population and it forces us to look for opportunities to expand local capacity from all points of view. The idea of this project comes from a stringent need for the present and future generations and the damaged ecosystem that requires an urgent revitalization.
The project proposes to achieve the goal by: increasing the level of ecological education of Speia citizens in order to extend the waste management system, aiming at recycling and their ecological warehousing in order to minimize the negative impact of harmful waste on the environment.
Specific objectives of the project include the essential spheres of environmental and community revitalization of Speia, such as: improving urban microclimate, improving environmental factors and population health; development of recreational functions. The current situation of the public infrastructure of the locality and the need of the inhabitants justifies the necessity of this project implementation. The offered opportunities are not to be ignored, they will increase the attractiveness of the locality and will improve the examples of good practices that can be taken by other localities. Sustainable management of chemicals is an important factor in achieving sustainable development, eradicating poverty, improving human health and the environment. At present, chemicals are widely used in the spheres of human activity, bringing important benefits to economic development but also potential risks to human health and the environment, if they are poorly managed. It is essential to ensure that the waste storage platforms are expanded in such a way as to minimize the negative impact on the environment and human health.
The project will have a positive impact on both, the locality itself and the ecological part of the Nistru River, on the bank of which we are located. The natural ecosystem of the area where we are located will regenerate, the neighboring areas will be restored and this will make better the global environmental macro system. Combining the new environmental facilities with the the area of education will bring the change of the image of the localities in the rural areas, the attractiveness will retain future generations and will irradiate the issue of the migration at the local level.
The scope and objectives set out in the project fit the fields of interest of the Small Grant Programme (SGP) Global Environment Facility (GEF), namely Local and Global Chemicals Coalition Management and, also, promote social inclusion, the integration of the gender and youth involvement. The land proposed for ecological improvement is currently poorly organized and affects the recreation possibilities of the inhabitants, especially children and young people. It, also, has a negative impact on the attractiveness of the locality for visitors from different localities, regions of our country, as well as for tourists coming from abroad. There is a stringent need to improve the structure and quality of the green spaces.
Analyzing the idea and the essence of the project, we can confidently confirm that it suits with the priorities of the National Strategy of the GEF Small Grants Programme and encourages the settlement of environmental problems, providing the necessary support addressing the urgent needs of the community and civil society organizations. It meets GPA GEF Moldova objective to enhance the capacity of local communities and NGOs to address global environmental issues
