Ayval?k Islands Integrated Marine Management
Ayval?k Islands Integrated Marine Management
Ayval?k Adalar? Nature Park consists of a total of 17,950 Hectares of land, including 19 islands. 78% or 13.969 hectares of the park is the sea/marine area. Despite the establishment of the fact that the marine biodiversity in the area is extremely rich through scientific research, no management plan of nature park has been implemented and in fact heavy use of the area continues. The most important factor in the continuation of marine biodiversity in the Mediterranean and in the Aegean is the sea meadows, in particular Posidonia oceanica. The sea meadows, in addition to their ecological value, are very important in ecosystem services. The fishing activities (fisheries/ professional and amateur) and marine tourism activities in the region are directly or indirectly damaging the Posidonia oceanica meadows. These damages occur through combing the sea-bed, and through racking in addition to other physical factors.

The main goal of the project is to ensure the ecological, social and economic sustainability of Ayval?k Nature Park by preserving its biological diversity. In this regard, the project aim is to contribute to the sustainable preservation of sea meadows - primarily Posidonia oceanica, which forms the main habitat in the area, through participatorty processes. In terms of effective protection of sea meadows; the interim goals of the project are as follows: creation of a distribution map of sea meadows; determining the pressure put by other sectors operating in the region on/above the sea meadows; Implementing as a pilot application to introduce the buoy system to the coves frequently used by tour boats and fishermen in one identified and most densely utilized locations; to increase the efficiency and awareness of stakeholders and the public, and to contribute to the establishment of a legal basis for the protection of sea meadows.
